Franco Ballestri, a Pioneer
in Italy when it comes to studying, designing, building and introducing
the Post Trenching System

All SEA’s machines are designed, built and patented by SEA itself.
The concept behind a new machine derives from specific needs linked to the project and therefore to the evolution compared to the previous model. Its Technical Director, Mr. Franco Ballestri started to develop the first trenching and dredging systems in 1970. A pioneer in Italy when it came to studying, designing, building and introducing the post trenching system to bury underwater pipelines and cables. His methods have been so innovative and functional that today all the post-trenching machines in Italy and worldwide follow his technology.

For each Trenching Machine, SEA relies on a Spread

The Spread is composed of:

  • Power Container (20’’): a CUMMINS Hydraulic Power Pack, together with its connectors & accessories, supplies current to the machine;
  • Workshop Container (20’’): accessorized with all the necessary tools and spare parts;
  • Control Cabin with PTM Control Panel and Sonar Workstation: the operator monitors and operates the machine from here, while underwater and during launch and recovery operations;
  • Umbilical (60m, adjustable to each project requirements): it connects the machine to the vessel and several floaters are installed along its length;
  • Quick-release set: it allows automatic release in case of vessel sudden position loss;
  • Auxiliary Power Pack (if necessary);
  • Spare Cutting Wheels (chosen according to the project’s necessities, such as soil characteristics, pipe diameter and required trench depth);
  • L.A.R.S. system for the machine and the umbilical (to be installed on the TSV stern if necessary): they consist of A-frame, winch and PTM Basement for machine launch and recovery.
